At HCS, music is accessible to all, and we base our programme each year on the abilities and interests of the pupils we currently teach.
All Key Stage 3 pupils have a classroom-based music lesson each week.
Music lessons are practical and each lesson aims to include elements of performing, composing, and listening. Pupils may work individually and in groups of differing sizes, depending upon the task.
GCSE music and A level music and music technology are studied to the Edexcel specification. Pupils have a 100% pass rate, most earning grades A* - C, with a high level of ‘value added'.
Our department is resourced with a computer suite, keyboards, classroom percussion, several pianos, an organ and harpsichord, and a recently recording studio.
The music block has ample space with several practice rooms and performance areas.
We offer private tuition in most instruments and voice and pupils may choose to take graded examinations.
Current extra-curricular activities include orchestra, jazz band, a variety of choirs and vocal harmony groups, rock groups and a theory club.
The department regularly puts on a large-scale musical production.
Past musical productions include:Honk!, Sweeney Todd, a tribute to Sgt Pepper and The Threepenny Opera.
In addition to frequent concerts, recitals, and events, a wide range of unusual performing opportunities occur each year and have included choral performances in Canterbury Cathedral and Southwark Cathedral, site-specific installations, and biennial performing arts trips to New York.
We offer trips both educational and entertaining which have in the past included visits to the musical productions of Wicked and Hairspray in London's West End.
