Cricket is the main sport for boys at HCS in the Summer Term, although recently, girls’ cricket has been introduced at junior age groups. Underpinning the success of the cricket programme is the indoor winter programme that takes place during both the Autumn and Spring Terms.

Over the past three years, much investment has been made to raise the standards of cricket; this includes the relaying of the main square, additional changing facilities for umpires and opposition teams, new site-screens and covers, together with additions to the indoor 4 lane facility with bowling machines.

All boys have games lessons for 2 hours once a week, where a structured programme of cricket is followed, offering all abilities a chance to learn and play the game. Additional team practices take place on one afternoon a week. Lunchtime training sessions take place for the junior cricketers using the lower campus ground and nets.

The playing programme consists of mid-week fixtures together with block fixtures against local teams and rivals further afield, to a competitive standard. HCS competes in the Hampshire Cup age group competitions at a variety levels from U12 to U15. The first XI, play an annual match against the MCC as well as touring overseas teams (from India and South Africa over the past seasons). Biennial tours have taken place to India, selecting from boys in Years 10-13. Additionally, pre-season tours are undertaken to the T20 Isle of Wight festival and to Cornwall. A junior end of season tour to Surrey and Sussex, sees the U12/13 age group beginning the touring process, where lifelong lessons are learnt about both cricket and importantly teamwork, camaraderie and understanding of cultures and customs.
