Hockey is the main sport for the girls in the Autumn Term and boys in the Spring Term. The aim of the coaching team is to provide a safe, enjoyable, fair, challenging, rewarding and positive experience for all pupils. Alongside this we also aim to identify player’s strengths and weaknesses and work on these to develop and improve the individual’s game and core skills. This allows HCS pupils to develop a team where each player is aware of their role and responsibilities to enable the team to play at its full potential and represent the school on match days. There is a big emphasis on creating a team ethos and pupils are encouraged to take leadership on the field.
All teams have fixtures every week throughout the term, with a games afternoon and a squad training session, we also offer an extra skills session if pupils wish to improve their individual core skills. We currently have a Senior Squad, an U16 Cup Squad, U15 Squad, U14 Squad, U13 Squad and we have 2 7-aside squads at U12 level for both the girls and boys.
HCS Teams regularly compete against other schools during the week and on a Saturday. Currently the school has block fixtures against Lord Wandsworth College, Dauntsey's School, Churchers College, Portsmouth Grammar School, King Edwards School, Ballard School, Godolphin School, Seaford College, Ryde School and Warminster School. This challenging fixture list tests our players and prepares them to compete in the county tournaments. We enter the Hampshire County Tournaments and also the National Knockout Cup. In 2011, the U16 girls were semi-finalists at the South Regional National Cup Tournament and the same year were finalists at the U16 National Indoor Finals.
HCS’s hockey is very proud of the number of players who go on to representative honours at County, Regional and National Level. In the past, we have produced U16 and U18 International players for England.
We have close links with Trojans HC; we are also a training venue for the Junior Development Centre and Junior Academy Centre. In the past we have organised coaching master classes from GB Olympians Alex Danson, Crista Cullen and Anne Panter and former South African International Craig Peel.
We also enter a girls’ team into the Ladies Summer League. This runs on a Tuesday evening throughout the summer term, we open this up to Years 10, 11 and Seniors. This pushes them to play against stronger, more experienced opposition and great pre-season training for September. This is also something we would like to offer for the boys, hopefully starting next summer.
