A tailor-made course aimed at overseas students with the main focus being on improving linguistic skills in English which will then prepare students for A Level studies.
Sixth Form Foundation Year
Collegiate school (HCS) the foundation year students can either opt to attend
for just the Foundation year or they can opt to attend for three years. The three-year programme includes the same
initial Foundation year and then the students will embark on a two year A Level
course if they have developed the required skills for their subject choices.
In the Foundation Year, students will
spend a significant amount of time working with a qualified EAL teacher, in
order to improve their skills in English: reading, comprehension, writing and
speaking. Students will be prepared, depending on individual needs, to take
examinations leading to an English Language qualification. Currently this
qualification is the well-respected IELTS (International English
Language Testing System) qualification which focuses on language performance
and promoting the development of transferable skills for academic study and
employability. IELTS is recognised by many organisations worldwide including
educational institutions, employers, government and other professional bodies.
Students will also take GCSE
equivalent qualifications in science (BTEC) and mathematics (IGCSE) along with
having the chance to experience lessons in subjects they are interested in or
would like to continue with to A Level.
This will help them to learn the technical vocabulary they will require
when embarking on full A Level courses. The students will join a Sixth
Form tutor group and will integrate with all other Sixth Form students for
games, Sixth Form enrichment and co-curricular activities.
The Foundation Year is a perfect
opportunity for overseas students to experience life in the UK in a supportive
and friendly environment. They will
learn about cultural differences and develop strategies to enable them to get
the most out of their academic studies and their experience at HCS. Students will be taught in small groups by
subject-specific staff along with having a personal tutor who they will meet
each week on a one-to-one basis.
The students will be able to
experience a friendly English boarding school and will be welcome quickly into
the warm multicultural boarding community. The boarding house is set in a
stunning location providing superb on-site facilities and allows them to take
advantage of a wide range of activities both after school and at weekends
including trips to London, historical Winchester and Southampton.
Students who opt for the
three year course have to successfully pass the foundation year before they
move into their second year where they will be expected to study for three or
four A Level qualifications. In the
third year they will continue their second year of A Level study in preparation
for university or a particular career.
Please see the Sixth Form page for a list of A Level subjects offered.
