A tailor-made course aimed at overseas students with the main focus being on improving linguistic skills in English which will then prepare students for A Level studies.

Hampshire Collegiate School offers a tailor-made course aimed at international students who wish to accelerate their English skills, prepare for the demands of A Level study and go on to attain high A Level results and further their education at university.

Pre-A Level Course

This one-year course will prepare students academically, linguistically and socially for success in our Sixth Form.

Each student follows a demanding individual English language programme which is taught by our highly experienced EAL (English as an additional language) teachers. Using a variety of teaching methods, students are taught in pairs or small groups to ensure they make optimum progress and develop English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

Students will be prepared, depending on individual needs, to take examinations leading to an internationally recognised English language qualification such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or IGCSE English as a second language.   During the year, students will also take GCSE equivalent qualifications in science (BTEC), mathematics (IGCSE) and business studies (BTEC or BEC). This will help them to learn the technical vocabulary they will require when embarking on full A Level courses.

Pre-A Level students will become part of a year group community, joining tutor groups and integrating with their peers for sport as well as enrichment and co-curricular activities.

Entry requirements for Pre-A Level

It is anticipated that students will normally have met the following criteria (or equivalent) before starting on the Pre-A Level course:

  • English language level - A minimum of level CEFR B2 or IELTS 5.0.

  • Students will also complete a Pre-A Level entrance exam for Maths and English.

  • A Skype interview may also be carried-out.

Many pupils may still require additional support from the EAL Department in order for them to access the full curriculum. Pupils have 2 EAL lessons per week. If extra lessons are required this may incur an extra cost. Parents/guardians will be informed by the Registrar if EAL/IELTS lessons will be an additional cost.

Entry requirements for A Levels

To progress into the Sixth Form at Hampshire Collegiate School and study A Levels, students will normally have achieved the following (or equivalent):

English language level – common European framework level B2 or equivalent.

  •  A ‘pass’ or above in their BTEC science course.
  •  A mathematics IGCSE or equivalent at grade 5 or above.
  •  A ‘pass’ grade or above in BTEC or BEC business studies course.

Further details of equivalent levels of English language qualifications can be found on the following website: www.examenglish.com/CEFR/cefr.php
