HCS Success at Southampton Music Festival

Hampshire Collegiate Junior School is celebrating their success in the Southampton Music Festival. Both their Infant and Junior choirs entered the competition held at The Central Hall, Southampton on Friday 13 March, 2009, as part of Southampton Music Festival.

The junior choir was placed first overall to win the St Mary’s Challenge Cup whilst the Infant choir was placed runners-up in their class. In a rare move, the adjudicator also awarded the choir high Honours for their performance and The Percival Cup for the ‘Best song in two or more parts’, for their very moving rendition of ‘When I Survey The Wondrous Cross’.

Head Teacher Elaine Hooton said:  “It was a wonderful privilege to be at the Central Hall throughout the morning, to hear the celebration of music that all the choirs brought to the competition. To then go on to be awarded so highly for their performance, was testament to the enthusiasm and quality that the children and our Head of Music, Mrs Kay Francis, brought to their music-making. I would like to congratulate everyone involved and I hope this will encourage more young people, in our school and others, to experience how music can enrich their lives and learning.”

The junior choir has now been invited to join the prestigious End-of-Festival concert on Friday 20th at Thornden Hall which showcases the very best performances from the two-week long event.
