Pupils from Hampshire Collegiate School were delighted to
welcome Lawrie McMenemy, MBE as their guest speaker at the
latest in their ‘Nightingale Series of Lectures’ held on Monday 05
October.
Nearly 100 pupils, staff and parents assembled to hear Mr
McMenemy speak about his career in football and how the sport
has changed from game, to business to industry.
Following an introduction by Mr MacDonald, Lawrie enthralled
listeners with anecdotes that spanned his childhood and
education in the North East through to the time he spent as a
manager of Southampton Football Club, which included how he
managed to sign football legend Kevin Keegan without the media
finding out!
Included within his speech, Lawrie outlined the importance of
attention to detail and learning to listen to others. Lawrie
concluded by talking about his charity work, in particular his work
as an ambassador for the Special Olympics, and he urged pupils
to think about becoming involved with a charity.
The Nightingale Series of Lectures aim to introduce pupils in
Years 12 and 13 to a number of eminent individuals who have
reached the top of their chosen professions. Lawrie McMenemy
is rated in the Guinness Book of Records as one of the twenty
