Day of Languages at the Prep School

Last week the children in the Prep School celebrated world languages. First, Mrs Hooton opened the event with an assembly focusing on the languages spoken by children at HCS and invited us to say a phrase. We heard a variety of them including Russian, Hindi and Turkish.

Later on, Madame Worden read an amusing story to Year 6 children about a girl eating a red hot chilli that she was not supposed to touch. The only thing was that it was all in French and we had to work out the story. Some words we managed to work out easier than others. Once we were into groups, we were given a copy of the story in a different language and asked to look at the script direction, punctuation, accents and to find key words. Our group got the book in Arabic. The thing that stood out to me the most was the different type of characters and it was written from right to left. My favourite thing of the day was to work out the story in French of the girl eating a chilli. For lunch we had Mexican food and got to wear a sombrero.

On the same day, Year 4 children were treated to a session of Chinese Mandarin. I really enjoyed how to count up to ten. Our teacher Yan told us the funny story about the Chinese boy writing a letter to a man called Mr ‘Ten Thousand’, which was interesting. I also liked playing the number game. I was imagining that I would go and see the Great Wall of China. Now I can say ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ in Chinese. Xie Xie Yan.
