Year 6 Re-enact Jarrow March

Year 6 have been studying life in the 1930s. As part of this topic they have learnt about the Jarrow Crusade which took place in 1936. 200 men from Jarrow marched to London (about 300  miles) to take a petition to Parliament; their main factory had been closed which resulted in about 75% of Jarrow being unemployed. They wanted to express what poor living conditions they were living in. It took 27 days and they would have sung songs of encouragement along the way. Year 6 made up their own Jarrow Crusade songs and we re-enacted the
march, singing their songs around the grounds. They didn’t march the full 300 miles (probably only 1 mile) but the children enjoyed the activity!
