Alex Attewell, a former director of the Florence Nightingale Museum in London and now a freelance writer and heritage consultant, contacted us to let us know about her article describing a recent trip to the Selimiye Barracks which is published in the "Nursing Standard".
"I took a group to the Selimiye Barracks at Uskudar, a suburb of Istanbul on the Asian side of the Bosphorus straits, as part of a recent tour. British soldiers injured fighting the Russians in the Crimean War were brought through the straits, via the Black Sea, to the barrack hospital at Scutari, the British name for Selimiye. The British used it for 18 months
during the conflict, which lasted from 1853 to 1856....."
