Thrilling Victory for HCS Girl

Hampshire Collegiate School 1st XI girls Hockey team remain unbeaten against schools and colleges in Hampshire, after their thrilling victory over Peter Symonds in the Hampshire National Schools Championships final on 10 November, 2010.  The girls took the lead early on, through Laura who was unmarked in the ‘D’; a great ball from Jenny beat three defenders for Laura to side step the keeper and slip it past her left leg. The HCS lead was doubled through Jenny, 10 minutes later from a strike from the top of the ‘D’.

Symonds scored early on in the second half which put pressure on our midfield and defence, who kept their heads playing simple hockey, passing the ball around, in contrast to the Symonds team who played more individual hockey.  The HCS girls worked tirelessly as a unit, closing down the Symonds defence, forcing mistakes allowing HCS to create more attacking opportunities.  The HCS defenders and midfield constantly worked in pairs, channelling and blocking attacks preventing Symonds from scoring any more goals. Despite Symonds being awarded several short corners towards the end of the game, they failed to convert, resulting in a momentous victory for our girls. Final score HCS 2, Peter Symonds 1.
