Music

HCS Prep School Orchestra
Music is a very important part of the school.  All children from Nursery to Year 6 have class music lessons taken by a music specialist in a well-equipped purpose built music room. The aim is to give pupils:

  • an understanding of the skills of music,
  • the opportunity to be creative in music playing,
  • the chance to learn the recorder in Year 3,
  • the experience of composing and improvising,
  • the enjoyment of listening to a variety of styles,
  • a love of music and  the confidence to perform to an audience.

Early Years and Key Stage 1 are able to enjoy singing, music and movement and playing a variety of percussion instruments.  The highlight of the year is the Christmas Nativity which is always enjoyed by an appreciative audience.

The Prep School Choir, taken from Years 3-6, gives outstanding performances throughout the year including Harvest, the Annual Carol Service at Romsey Abbey and Prize Day as well as larger productions, one of the most popular being “Joseph”. One of the most recent achievements was winning two cups at the Southampton Music Festival.  HCS Prep School Choir at the Honeypot Childrens Charity Carol Concert December 2011

The Music Department has a dedicated team of nine peripatetic teachers who offer a range of instrumental lessons for piano, voice, guitar, trumpet, cornet, violin, ‘cello, saxophone, clarinet, flute and drums.  There is a large School Orchestra.  Children are entered for the Associated Board and Trinity Guildhall Examinations.

The Annual Music Competition gives pupils the chance to perform to an audience and is adjudicated by the Head of Music at the Senior School.

Children may apply for a Music Scholarship Award for entry to the Senior School.
