Music

  • At HCS, music is accessible to all, and we base our program each year on the abilities and interests of the pupils we currently teach.
  • All Key Stage 3 pupils have a double music lesson each week; Year 7 pupils have two double lessons per week.
  • Music lessons are practical and each lesson aims to include elements of performing, composing, and listening. Pupils may work individually and in groups of differing sizes, depending upon the task.
  • GCSE music and A-level music and music technology are studied to the Edexcel specification. Pupils have a 100% pass rate, most earning grades A* - C, with a high level of ‘value added'.
  • Our department is well resourced with computers, keyboards, classroom percussion, orchestral instruments, several pianos, an organ and harpsichord, and professional standard recording equipment. The music block has ample space with several practice rooms and performance areas.
  • We offer private tuition in most instruments and voice and pupils may choose to take graded examinations.
  • Current extra-curricular activities include orchestra, string group, choir, rock groups, jazz band, Grade V theory club, song writing club, vocal harmony group, and a large-scale musical production.
  • Past musical productions include: One Million Tiny Plays About Britain, Honk!, and The Lady with the Lamp and Sweeney Todd.
  • In addition to frequent concerts, recitals, and events, a wide range of unusual performing opportunities occur each year and have included choral performances in Canterbury Cathedral, site-specific installations, world premiere performances of pupils' compositions, and three performing arts trips to New York.
  • We offer trips both educational and entertaining. Past theatre visits have included Wicked and Hairspray, in London.
