Curriculum Overview - Years 7 to 11

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9) 
All subjects are now timetabled as discrete lessons and are taught by specialist teachers.  Pupils are given the opportunity to achieve in a variety of disciplines and to acquire skills and knowledge which will provide the basis for future learning: specifically for GCSE courses Pupils are taught in ability sets in English, Mathematics, Science, Modern Foreign Languages and Humanities.  Subjects taken in Year 7 are English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, Religious Studies, French, Spanish, Art, Music, Drama, PE and Games, ICT, DT, PSHE.  In year 8 German is introduced; pupils choose to study modern languages from the choice of French, Spanish or German.  Subjects studied in Year 8 continue through to the end of KS3 (Year 9).  Heads of Year or Tutors meet with each pupil once a week to monitor progress in all aspects of school life and to set learning objectives for academic work.
 
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) 
All pupils continue to study English, English Literature, Maths, Science (either 3 separate subjects or Double Award as notified) and one Modern Foreign Language (French, German, Spanish).  These core subjects give pupils a range of skills and knowledge which will allow them to progress to a wide variety of further courses.  In addition, pupils select a further four or five subjects in which they have particular strengths or which will lead them to a chosen career.  The optional subjects are French, German, Spanish, History, Geography, RS, Art, Drama, Music, Business Studies, Sports Studies, Business & Communication Studies, Design Technology, ICT, Latin and Statistics.  Most pupils will be entered for nine or ten GCSEs.  All pupils follow a course of study in PSHE and Physical Education.  Heads of Year or Tutors continue to monitor individual pupil progress.
