We hope you enjoy the Sixth Form experience at HCS.  You can expect to join a friendly, purposeful environment in which you will take more responsibility for your studies, develop independent work habits and also have opportunities to hone and refine your personal interests.

The Sixth Form represents a vital staging post in your education, your career and, ultimately, the future path of your life.  With that in mind, we will support you in deciding your educational or vocational path via careers guidance and offer good advice to help you achieve the grades you need.

There is a bigger picture to Sixth Form study.  Your success will depend upon your ability to be self-disciplined and self-motivated with your studies, qualities which you will need in the world of work.  The great advantage of a Sixth Form School like HCS is the effective transition and help we can provide in letting you adjust to the demands of advanced learning rather than being thrown in at the deep end at a FE college and left to fend for oneself.  Being able to effectively manage your time will enable you to invest more energy into your other interests and, hopefully, the overall life of the school, whether as a prefect, a house captain, a member of the Sixth Form Society or simply being a positive role model for our younger pupils. Your contribution to the harmony of the school will be enormously important.

The Careers Programme
All Sixth Form pupils follow a comprehensive careers programme with approximately 90% of pupils going onto Higher Education. The Careers Library is furnished with the very latest careers material  and computer software, including ECCTIS (Educational Counselling and Credit Transfer Information Service) which gives pupils information on all aspects of Higher Education and particularly university (UCAS) entry.

All pupils in the Lower Sixth take a Centigrade Test which matches a pupil's interests, abilities and personal qualities with the courses available in Higher Education at both degree and HND levels.  This provides them with a profile of the course areas most appropriate for them to research, and lists the universities and colleges registering suitable courses within their ability range.  Lower Sixth pupils also follow a work experience programme which gives them additional material for their personal statements in their Record of Achievement, and experience of the world of work.

Responsibility
All Sixth Formers are assessed in some area of responsibility during their two-year course.  Many are successful in accepting responsibility as prefects, chosen directly by the Head and led by a Head of School and Senior Boy or Girl.

Along with the Sixth Form Council, team games, the activities, and the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, this path of self-development and responsibility makes the Sixth Form at HCS a totally different product from that offered elsewhere.
