Year 10 GCSE students became plant forensic scientists during their Biology lessons when they were tasked with determining the disease a tree had been affected by.
Working in small groups, they asked the landowner (their teacher) some questions that their groups had agreed upon in order to find out information about where the tree had come from and what other plants were around and/or infected. They were then allowed to examine the tree (without touching it) and had to choose relevant scientific tests to persuade the landowner to pay for. With the results of the tests, they then had to correctly identify the pathogen that had infected the tree.
