Hot on the heels of the parliamentary vote to delay Brexit last Thursday, over 30 Hampshire Collegiate Senior School students came together to listen and ask question of Caroline Nokes, the Conservative MP for Romsey and Southampton North and Minister of State for Immigration.

What a fascinating and tumultuous time to be given the opportunity for a glimpse behind the scenes in cabinet! Caroline covered the many different demands on the time of a cabinet minister and what representation means.

The talk and Q&A session that followed was a candid and insightful conversation between Caroline and students from Years 8 to 13 chaired by Megan in Year 12. Questions ranged from the lack of women in Parliament to the role of collective responsibility in cabinet and the funding of state education. There was of course much discussion of the ‘B’ word – Brexit, its impact on immigration and the advisability of referendums as a means of decision making.

Students really enjoyed the opportunity, which overran as Caroline agreed to stay to ensure all who wanted were able to pose questions. We may have some budding politicians in our midst!
