Students from Hampshire Collegiate School collected several awards in this year’s Round the Island Race. With some of the toughest sailing conditions in a decade, which saw only 288 of the near 1,300 entrants cross the finish line, the students took over 13 hours of competitive racing to complete the course.
The crews brought home almost every trophy they entered for. The crew on ‘Embley’, the school’s 37-foot deep sea race yacht, won the ISC Class Raymarine Young Mariners of the Year Award and were first in their class (ISC 7A). The crew on King George, one of the school’s Etchells, brought home the IRC Raymarine Young Sailor Trophy for the second year running. Both boats finished within four minutes of each other.
Congratulations to both crews for their teamwork and tenacity, and for believing in themselves to achieve:
Embley: Jack H, Paige, Igor, Paddy, Ben, Olivia W and Emily M
King George: Emily W, Miranda, Charlie and Edward B
The sailing teams’ support rib, also used for RYA Powerboat 2 training, was crewed by students Taijan and Harry M who will go on to their formal assessment in July, and attended King George throughout the training and early race coverage, seeing the competing yacht crews home safe.
