Modern Foreign Languages
Our Modern Foreign Language teachers create an inspiration for a love of languages from a young age. In Reception, Year 1 and , the teaching of French develops listening and speaking skills, through games, rhymes and songs. Children begin to show an understanding of single words and identify rhyming sounds through physical response.
From Year 3, a greater emphasis is placed on phonics to help our children pronounce both familiar and unfamiliar words, read with more confidence and spell with accuracy. Our children develop an understanding of French grammar so they can understand and construct more complex sentences. Spanish is introduced in Year 5, enabling our children to enjoy the experience of learning a second foreign language.
We focus not only on the language but also the culture of French and Spanish speaking countries as we celebrate national holidays and, in May, Year 6 children have the opportunity to put their linguistic skills and vocabulary into practice with a five-day trip to Normandy.
