Senior School

English

English is taught with enthusiasm and passion. We aim to inspire a love of reading and writing that will be of benefit throughout our students’ lives.

Our small class sizes and the use of whole texts allow maximum opportunity for discussion and the development of individual response. As our students progress through each year, their work is increasingly focused towards GCSE and in Year 9 all texts are of GCSE standard to ensure that our curriculum is appropriate, exciting and challenging.

A full Shakespeare text is taught in Years 7, 8 and 9, as well as a contemporary novel, some pre-1900 fiction, a selection of poetry and some drama. For example, a pupil in Year 7 may study ‘The Sleeping Army’, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Myths and Legends’ and poetry from different cultures.

At GCSE, English Language and English Literature are taught in an integrated manner and the majority of our students are entered for both GCSEs with an exceptionally high success rate in both subjects.

All students participate in our annual public speaking competition, which provides an excellent way of building confidence in what can be a very daunting but invaluable and essential life skill.

We organise regular field trips, with visits to The Globe and other London theatres being an annual occurrence. Texts are brought to life through dramatic interpretations on the stage and also within the classroom, as students are encouraged to explore the texts in a variety of ways.
