HCS Keelboat Programme

Standing tall and just 20 miles from Hampshire Collegiate School, our fleet of Etchell 22s are moored in the Solent at Lymington Harbour. Sailing is a popular co-curricular activity with many of our children from the Prep School through to the Sixth Form enjoying our Keelboat Programme. It also forms part of the Games options in the Senior School.

While some of our children are already keen or experienced sailors, many have their first taste of coastal keelboat and powerboat water sports within the school curriculum. During the Summer term, 100 children per month enjoy our keelboat or powerboat training. With time on the water and a continuous programme of training provided by our experienced in-house instructors, our children become competent young sailors with many going on to gain Royal Yachting Association (RYA) certification both in keelboats and powerboat PB2.

Each year, our sailors compete in the Isle of Wight Round the Island Race in our Etchells. We are the fastest team of young sailors and were positioned 111 in the overall race (out of over 1,200 teams competing), collecting the 2018 Raymarine Young Sailors Trophy.

The school is an affiliated member of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club which means our young sailors and their families are able to use the facilities of the Club. Students are now taking part in Thursday evening Club racing and will go on to participate in the Solent Keelboat Series in 2019.

With two more Etchells racing on the water next year, it is only a matter of time before our students are crewing the Fastnet Race.
